My Journey to Become a Writer 03/02/2024 Post #62

The day didn’t start out all that well. I forgot to put the filter in the coffee maker and got a good tongue-covering of grinds when I sipped through my straw.

I was able to salvage my caffeine by straining it into another cup; but that cup got knocked over and hit my water glass, which spilled, too. Both beverages splashed onto the pair of glasses I’d just cleaned and then settled in on my sheets. So then there was laundry…

It was a rough start to the day. There may have also been some tears added into the mix.

In much better news, I finally got the courage to face my manuscript again.

What Did I Accomplish Today to Be a Writer?

This book that I’ve been writing, called, “About Trees”. is over 150,000 words and according to multiple sources (including the two agents who told me I could send it on to them), it needs to be below 100,000 words. Ideally, I’d lop it down to about 85,000 or a little less.

I chopped my way to page eighty-two today and have a much better grasp on what I can cut away moving forward, so I’m encouraged.

Since I plan to write a series, I hope to save the sections that don’t make it for subsequent books.

I’m trying to think of the process like a sculptor who cuts away any chunk, shard and sliver of rock that isn’t necessary. Some famous artist had that policy; but I can’t remember who it was. That little bit of information must have been cut from my mind, which maybe means it doesn’t matter.

I did Day 62 of the 100 Words a Day Writing Challenge 2024 through LA Writer’s Lab.

My brain is shutting down for the week, so that’s all I’ve got to say.

Thanks for reading what I’m writing,

Jody Susan

Some thoughts on writing in the morning (with maybe a bit more coordination in making coffee):

Here’s a post I wrote last summer during a particularly hectic time, when I still chose to write regularly.

I'm not sure what to say here: I once got second place in a dog-look-alike-contest? I know how to fold a fitted sheet? I'm pretty much a poster child for social backwardness - at least as far as social media is concerned; but I have some stories I think I'm supposed to share and am attempting to do that here, in this space.
