Helping people Help Their People Assisting Others in Sharing Their Stories And Typing A lot Along the Way

Everyone has a story, but so often we as storytellers

  • Don’t know where to start
  • Can’t figure out how to finish
  • Or wind up mixed up somewhere in the middle

My job is to help people with a story they want to tell propel themselves forward through the process.

Consultation Services

I focus on:

  • Thought provoking questions to get to the “why” the story needs telling, instead of getting stuck in the “what” of clunky details
  • Helping storytellers work through structure points to complete a beginning, middle, and end that makes sense
  • Simplifying language and getting rid of unnecessary words, while still maintaining the artist’s voice
  • Reducing typos and eliminating fluff that would otherwise detract from the theme
  • Encouraging writers to get to the root of what they are scared to say and helping them become comfortable expressing it

Consultation Fees

All meetings can be conducted remotely via Zoom, Facetime, WhatsApp, by phone, or in person, depending on the storyteller’s location and preference.

*Please share all documents in Microsoft Word with 1-inch margins, Times New Roman 12-pt. font, double-spaced.

Initial Consultation

This type of meeting is for individuals just starting out in the story telling process who are seeking advice about where to begin.

One Hour – Initial Consultation (Remote): $125.00

One Hour – Initial Consultation (In Person): $200.00

Together, we will formulate a plan for how I can support the writer in next steps.

Two-Hundred-Word Consultation

Following the Initial Consultation, I will send out a set of questions to help the writer express the Who, What, When, Why, Where and How of their story. If my help is desired, they can schedule a Two-Hundred-Word Consultation.

The reason I call it this, is that the requirement is to write two-hundred word answers for each of the six categories:

Who? 200 words

What? 200 words

When? 200 words

and so on…

So, Why do this?

Well, Where there is a lack of clarity, the discipline of expressing thoughts into a set number of words helps expand the story and distill it down at the same time.

How do I know?

I’ve had to stick to set word counts, and it does wonders for delving below the surface, but also smoothing out a story.

Then, at least forty-eight hours prior to the scheduled meeting, the writer will combine their six answers into a 1,200 word submission and send it to me. I will review the answers and also prepare a set of follow-up questions.

Two Hour – Two-Hundred-Word Consultation (Remote): $250.00

Two Hour – Two-Hundred-Word Consultation (In Person): $325.00

The goal of this meeting is to help the writer explore the world of their story while getting a better grasp on their characters, plot, and the theme they want to express.

Outline Exploration Appointment

Upon completing the Two-Hundred-Word Consultation, I will send my notes, along with a set of questions to the writer to help them explore the main beats of their story. If they would like to continue with my services, they can schedule an Outline Exploration Appointment.

Then, at least forty-eight hours prior to our meeting, the storyteller returns their answers to the questionnaire, in the form of a three-page outline. I will read through their submission and prepare questions to help them move forward in the story process in an efficient manner, while still helping to maintain their individual voice.

Two Hour – Outline Exploration Appointment (Remote): $300.00

Two Hour – Outline Exploration Appointment (In Person): $375.00

During the Outline Exploration Appointment, I will offer recommendations for starting and completing a rough draft and help the writer set a timeline in which they’d like to complete the project.

Rough Draft Review

As a follow-up to the Outline Exploration Appointment, I will send my outline notes, along with ideas for next steps in helping the writer explore the world of their story, so that they can work toward showing instead of telling.

At this point, it’s okay to write messy. The most important thing is to just get those thoughts down on the page.

Sometimes it’s hard to find a reader, and sometimes a writer can feel downright ashamed about sharing their work.

To foster a safe environment for receiving feedback, If the writer wants to continue with me, I will read the rough draft (holes and all), and offer a two-hour follow-up consultation to share my thoughts and help prepare them for the rewrite-process.

Once pages have been submitted to me, and I see the story’s length, I will set a deadline for myself to complete my read-through, and then schedule a story-review consultation with the writer that we can both agree upon.

Read-through is $5 per typed page

Plus

Two Hour – Rough Draft Review Consultation (Remote): $2,000.00

Two Hour – Rough Draft Review Consultation (In Person): $2,075.00

The goal of this meeting is to get the writer ready for facing off with the rewrite process.

Rewrite Review

As a follow-up to the Rough Draft Consultation, I will send the writer a Word file with their work, which also includes a set of my notes, edits, comments, suggestions – and ideally – encouragement. This feedback should help the writer distill their theme and further hone and expand their plot points as needed.

If the writer decides they would like to continue on as a client, then upon completion of the second draft, it can be sent to me for another review. Upon receipt of these pages, I will set realistic benchmarks for myself to get the submission read and schedule a consultation with the writer.

Read-through is $5 per typed page

Plus

Two Hour – Rewrite Review (Remote): $2,000.00

Two Hour – Rewrite Review (In Person): $2,075.00

Following this meeting, the writer should be more prepared to cultivate a smoother manuscript.

Manuscript Review

After completing the Rewrite Review, I will send the writer a Word file with their work, which will also include my feedback for further polishing the piece.

Upon completing a third draft, the writer may send me their manuscript for final touch-ups from me. I will take note of the page-count and communicate a deadline for myself to the writer, so that the consultation date can be set.

Read-through is $5 per typed page

Plus

Six Hour – Manuscript Review (Remote): $2,000.00

Six Hour – Manuscript Review (In Person): $2,075.00

At this point in the story process, most writers have pretty much “left it all on the field”, and are ready to throw in the towel when it comes to more edits.

I see my role as a storytelling coach and want to offer encouragement, tips for technique, and needed correction – whatever the occasion calls for.

Once this point in the process is reached, I strongly encourage writers to begin to share their work with other readers besides me, because the more familiar I become with the backstory, especially through conversation, the more I might miss. I have no way of erasing all that data from my head that has been shared in drafts and conversation during our journey together, so I can no longer see the story from a totally fresh perspective.

For that reason, I highly advise that a line-editor, or at least other readers, become included at this point. I will try to make recommendations for this, if the need arises.

*Please share all documents in Microsoft Word with 1-inch margins, Times New Roman 12-pt. font, double-spaced.

Consultation Billing

Upon scheduling a consultation, the writer will be sent an invoice through QuickBooks. Payment options will include:

Payment options: Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, Bank, PayPal, Venmo

Payment for the consultation and one-half of the Read-through pages is due within fourteen days of requesting a consultation.

Payment for the remaining half of the Read-through pages is due upon the day of the consultation.

Subsequent Consulting and Story Review

If ongoing input is desired during the writing process, through emails or calls, to help keep the writer from getting stuck, this can be requested. I will then send an invoice for a retainer fee (to keep billing simple), and track my time until the paid amount has been depleted.

Subsequent Consulting and Story Review (Remote): $125.00 per hour

Subsequent Consulting and Story Review (In Person): $200.00 per hour

If the retainer is not used within six months time, it will be returned, upon request.

I look forward to reading what you’re writing, 🌷
