What Did I Accomplish Today to Be a Writer?

I did Day 225 of the 100 Words a Day Writing Challenge 2024 through L.A. Writers’ Lab and practiced reading through excerpts of my manuscript to prepare for my next recording session. There is a hymn in the next segment, and I’m wondering what I should do there. Do I take a risk and actually sing it? My face goes red to think about that, but reading it doesn’t quite do justice to the words.

Carrying a tune on my own can be like holding up one end of a piano – I tried practicing by listening to the song with headphones and then recording with my phone – my voice felt pretty flat when I played that back, but I don’t really like the sound of myself even on a voicemail, so discernment is a bit hard. I guess I’ll practice a little more and see if I get brave.

I also went through a short story a fellow-writer has submitted for publication. She’s received a contract, but has to slash her word count. Yesterday, I went through, rearranged some things into three acts and re-ordered some story parts so that repetitions would be easier to catch. This was a good exercise for me, because excessive word count is my biggest hurdle with my own work.

My Current Home Management Strategies to Help Stay Organized as a Writer

I’ve got company coming, so I’m trying to keep things simple. At the start of the day I try to straighten everything room by room before I tackle my To Do List, and do the same thing at night, so that piles don’t form. I’ve been thinking about how God told Adam and Eve to exercise dominion over the earth, so I figure I ought to make an effort to exercise dominion over the domain I’ve been set down in – otherwise, it will exercise dominion over me.
