I'm still trying to get the hang of recording my work and becoming more comfortable sharing it publicly. Well, maybe not "comfortable" - but quite a bit less scared. This is a poem that I wrote for Debbie Phillips of Wabash, Indiana a few years ago and recorded recently in honor of her 83rd birthday. Please click the triangle in the middle of the image below to listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cd2vqhFU6U8 I'd like to say "Thank you", to Debbie for opening my heart by opening her home “Speaking of Tulips”A snow began to threatenTight new tulips in the yardDisappointed grief set inFor the buds would soon be marredDeb didn’t like to do it,But said, “Snip them at the base.”So, I brought them in her kitchenWhere she put them in a vase“Too bad those flowers won’t open,”She stated with some dismayBut she never fussed nor frettedShe just went about her dayI never saw her coax themTheir petals she didn’t pryJust let those tulips rest thereWhere it was safe, warm, and dryI didn’t see it happenWhen the miracle took placeBut when I brought them to herThere was shock upon her faceThose precious buds had openedShowing colors deep insideDisplaying for her pleasureWhat they’d tried so hard to hideThey must have felt quite welcomedBy her hospitalityFor all at once they’d openedIt seems shelter was the keyI felt a sort of kinshipWith those flowers on displayFor my heart was shut up tightWith words my mouth wouldn’t sayDeb didn’t use a crowbarJust sat rocking in her chairShe took the time to listenDrawing forth each tiny careMy heart felt safe to openJust a little at a timeAnd so, I’d like to thank herWith this feeble little rhymeShe has a way about herWarming others from the coldThose tulips showed a portraitMy two lips could not have told Thanks for reading what I'm writing, Jody Susan My website is under construction right now, so it's pretty messy around here.
